FASHION PRACTICE AND THEORY

For this project I chose the title "Long Summer". Research lead me to my concept which was about different subcultures. I decided to focus on the 1960's and look into the sub-groups during this era.  The idea was to show the difference between two subcultures which developed during the same period. I chose to compare the Hippies and the Mods.

FINAL DESIGN

My design was a fusion of both the Hippie and the Mod styles.  I created flared sleeves and an under-sleeve inspired by the picture of Jimmy Hendrix. The flared panels at the bottom of the shirt represent the atmosphere and the freedom of the Hippie lifestyle. I have used bold blocks of colour consisting of white and blue symbolic of The Who and I also incorporated a pleat in the back of my shirt to display the Mods sharp, neat style. The cut out section at the front is to show the contrast between the two subcultures.
